EVP (ELECTRONIC VOICE PHENOMENA) Evidence

WHAT IS EVP?

Electronic Voice Phenomena, also known as EVP, is the practice of attempting to capture disembodied voices using electronic equipment.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF EVP

As you educate yourself about EVP, you will find that different people call the various types of EVP by assorted names. Here is a general guide to get you started and help you become familiar with some terms that are commonly used. By no means, are these the only terms you will come across when people are discussing EVP.

  • Traditional EVP

Traditional EVP voices are obtained by using some type of voice recorder to record the voices, headphones to listen to the captured recordings, and an editing program to clip and process the recordings. A popping or clicking sound is often heard prior to the communication. A cassette or reel-to-reel tape recorder or a digital sound recorder can be used to record the voices. Traditional EVP voices can be captured with or without providing background sound to aid speech formation.

The voices obtained in traditional EVP recordings sound "whispered" and "breathy". While human speech is made by forcing breath outwards, traditional EVP voices sound as if they are produced while breath is moved inwards.
  • Real Time Spirit Communication (RTSC)

RTSC is recorded while simultaneously providing some type of background noise such as white noise, running water, or speech fragments. The disembodied entities manipulate the noise to produce speech. The resulting voices are frequently loud, clear, and they can, at times, be heard while being recorded. RTSC voices are stronger, more clear, and have a more human quality that traditional EVP voices.

For most researchers, RTSC will offer more communication than Traditional EVP. The goal of RTSC is loud, clear, voices that are raw and unedited. Frequently, Traditional EVP will be found embedded in RTSC clips. In addition, some entities will use RTSC and Traditional EVP in response to a single question.
  • Direct Voice Communication (DVC)

EVP obtained through DVC is direct two-way communication. The voices are heard immediately. There is no need to edit the recorded clips.

HOW EVP IS CLASSIFIED

  • Class "A"

These voices are clear and easy to hear. There is no doubt about the message. Anyone listening to the recording can understand the message. This class of EVP does not require filtering or enhancing. It can often be heard without the use of headphones.

Be aware that Traditional EVP is rarely Class “A”. If everything you are getting is Class “A”, there is a high probability that what you have is not EVP.
  • Class "B"

Voices in the Class “B” range are hard to understand without filtering and enhancing. Intermittent words are heard softly. In order to retrieve the message, the clip must be filtered and enhanced using a sound editing program.
  • Class "C"

EVP in this range consists of what is recognizable as voices, but they are faint and unintelligible. After filtering and enhancing with a sound editing program, the message is not clear. If you are lucky, you may understand a few of the words.

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR RECORDING EVP

What do I use to record EVP?

Computers, digital sound recorders, cassette recorders, and reel-to-reel recorders can be used for recording EVP. Digital recorders and computers offer the best results since there are no mechanical sounds from the recording mechanisms to be filtered out.

Is it best to let the recorder run or to ask questions?

EVP is best captured by asking a question, pausing a bit for an answer, and then asking another question. The purpose of recording sound clips is to capture evidence of EVP. The researcher must listen to the recorded clips in order to find the EVP. Some researchers turn on the recorder and let it run. It is tedious to listen to fifteen, thirty, or sixty minutes of tape to discern spirit voices. The best results are obtained with the question and answer method.

How do I know that what I recorded is EVP and not pareidolia?

Pareidolia is finding sounds or images in random stimuli. When the recorded answers are appropriate responses to investigators' questions, it is validation that the EVP is real and not pareidolia. Direct statements in response to questions provide proof that EVP is meaningful communication.

What measures can I take to obtain the best quality EVP?

Attempt to control as many sound factors as you can during your recording. Avoid recording around machinery, appliances, or in windy locations. Be aware of what is happening around you while you are recording. Note when other researchers cough, speak, move around, open and close doors, or make other sounds. Note when other sounds occur such as cars passing or sirens. You can simply say, "Robert just walked across the room." Upon playback, Robert's footsteps will not be interpreted as paranormal sounds.

Know how to operate your equipment before attempting a session. Avoid bumping, knocking around, or having to leave an area during a recording session. Have a supply of extra batteries and tapes that can be easily reached when needed. While recording, don't crumple paper, rustle the pages of books or notebooks, rummage through bags, or remove the plastic from tapes or DVDs. When recording, set your recorder down on a steady, non-vibrating, surface. Avoid bumping it or moving things around near it. BE STILL and leave things alone while recording.

What if I need to talk to another investigator while recording?

Do not whisper while recording EVP. Researchers should speak to one another in normal voice tones. It is a good practice to have everyone present speak into the recorder at the beginning of the session. This will give a baseline for the human voices present during the recording. To begin a session, announce the location, date, time, and names of participants present. Do not attempt to record EVP while having a discussion, watching television, listening to music, or reviewing audio or video sources for evidence. BE QUIET and let the spirits speak.

How do I know who I am communicating with?

The use of certain methods during EVP sessions acts as a beacon to spirits who want to communicate. They will be drawn to the area. Some spirits are hungry for attention and acknowledgment, some are frantic, lost, and desperate. If you are asking for a certain contact, be aware that spirits will pretend to be the entity that you are asking for in an attempt to sustain communication with you. When asking for specific entities, always attempt to ask questions which validate that the entity communicating with you is indeed the entity you are seeking.

What things can I do to facilitate good communication?

The best results are obtained when in a calm, peaceful, state of being with your mind focused on the intention of obtaining good quality spirit voices. Do not attempt to do any type of spirit communication or spirit contact while under the influence of mind altering drugs or alcohol. To put it in simple terms, these substances dull your natural defenses and open you to spirit attachment or possession.

A few notes about RTSC.

To excel at RTSC, the researcher must be dedicated to the research of EVP, willing to spend time doing recording sessions, learning to discern the voices and mastering the techniques of editing. There are entities, who reside in other realms, who wish to facilitate EVP research. These beings are called technicians, assistants, or guides. They will help you with EVP research by offering advice and assisting other entities to communicate during recording sessions. To obtain high quality RTSC, the researcher should devote time to daily recording sessions. The daily sessions should be held around the same time each day. These sessions are necessary in order to develop the ability to discern the voices and build a relationship with technicians. When doing RTSC, the researcher will be able to hear the voices with his own ears while the recorder is running some of the time. The remainder of the voices will be heard upon playback.

Finally, realize that EVP, especially quality EVP, are not found in every recording. It takes persistence and knowledge to develop the skills needed to obtain quality EVP.
