Real Ghosts in Hot Springs

As children dressed up as ghosts go house to house searching for candy this Halloween, real ghosts are reportedly walking the halls of a Hot Springs hotel. Assisted by ghost hunters, FOX 16's Tyler Baldwin spent an evening within the haunted hallways looking for spirits.

The Velda Rose in Hot Springs opened its doors just before Halloween night a little more than 40 years ago. Although the hotel has only been open a couple decades, in that time it has seen its share of death and murder.

"There have been reports all along that this place is haunted," said ghost expert Karen Shillings.

There are so many stories of why the place may be haunted and strange stories of who is doing the haunting.

"It was pretty scary."

There was a fight in the hallway that left one person dead. Another upset man checked in, called his wife, then put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger.

James Johnson has worked in the Velda Rose for more than 18 years. Over that time he and the other employees have seen several of what they call unexplainable occurrences. The bathroom doors opening and closing by them selves. Elevators going up and down from the ninth floor to the sixth floor back to the lobby; when the doors open they are always empty.

“I looked up and saw this shadow go across the bar. It freaked me out," said James Johnson.

Mary Hughes had just finished up her shift in the hotel bar when walking through the lobby she encountered a rather ghastly guest of the hotel. She saw the figure of a woman behind the locked glass doors of the restaurant.

"She was dressed all in white. I ran away," said Hughes.

The Central Arkansas Society for Paranormal Research, or CASPR, brought in their high tech equipment to see if they could find any evidence of spirits who checked into the hotel but never checked out.

"We take a very scientific approach. We don't want to just go off the rumor that it is haunted."

Using heat sensitive cameras in the hallway we found nothing. However using night vision cameras in the hotel rooms we found several orbs floating around.

"The video will help us to see what we consider to be spirit orbs they appear as balls of light."

Our experts with CASPR will continue to investigate in the weeks to come. They are even planning a haunted tour for the hotel.
