Gurdon light

Read the first hand account of the experience CASPR Director, Karen Shillings and investigator, Chad Almond had while on the Gurdon tracks!  Click HERE for the incredible story.

The story of the Gurdon Light differs widely, like most urban legends.  The first sightings were allegedly in the 1930’s.  One story connects the light to a murder in 1931 of a local railroad foreman named William McClain.  He supposedly argued with an employee about workdays, and resulted in McClain being struck repeatedly in the head with a railroad tool until he died.  The light appeared for the first time a short while afterward and was then assumed to be McClain’s lantern still hard at work on the railroad.

Another popular rendition of the story is that an unnamed railroad worker accidentally fell into the path of an oncoming train and his head severed from his body.  The light is supposed to be the worker looking for his missing head up and down the tracks.

The light is seen in a desolate spot outside of town along the tracks that run there.  It is a tedious walk, and shouldn’t be attempted unless walking several miles on uneven terrain is within your physical capabilities.  It flickers different colors at different times, sometimes yellowish, sometimes bluish, it never stays put for terribly long.

There are many beliefs as to what the light is other than a spirit wandering the tracks of the small town.   Some believe it has something to do with quartz in the ground in this general area.  Some still just enjoy the experience and don’t worry about the true nature of the light.  It was featured on Unsolved Mysteries in Dec. 1994, and has remained a popular spot for visitors throughout the years.

We believe and have proven throughout many trips to Gurdon, that the light is merely a light anomaly.  It is a reflection of the lights from the highway nearby reflecting at just the right angle of the earth, and creating the appearance of a floating, flickering light.

Several members of our organization, however, have encountered other unexplained phenomenon in this region.  Things that weren’t directly on the tracks and could  in no way be the highway lights.  So, it is believed that there actually are two different experiences that can be had while in Gurdon.  One explained, and one not.  Which one have you seen???  Contact karen@casprquest.com with your Gurdon experience.
