prosperity bed & breakfast

Since becoming the owner/innkeepers of Prosperity School Bed & Breakfast, Richard and Janet Roberts have received many reports of paranormal occurrences in the school and have had a few experiences themselves. Many local people have told the owners about the school being haunted. The majority of reports have been from overnight guests. Those who have a different source are duly noted.

Much of the activity seems to center in and around Miss Rose Saxton's room. There were two ladies staying in the Bed and Breakfast, a woman and her elderly, yet spry, mother. The younger woman was in the suite, which is across the hall, while her mother occupied Rose's room overnight. The next morning when they came down for breakfast, the older woman asked if the innkeepers had knocked on her door. She was assured that only guests are on the second floor after they check in unless something needs attention.

The older woman reported that she heard a knock at the door, and assuming it was her daughter, had invited the caller to come in. When she received no response, she repeated the invitation. Still getting no answer, she forgot about it, until it happened again. She repeated the invitation and again go no response. She then opened the door but no one was there!

On another occasion, a guest staying in Rose's room reported that the door to the room would drift open each time she approached it with her hands full. There is a covered deck on the rear of the school house, and guest told Richard that he had sensed a presence on the deck with him.

A couple from England spent a night there and the evening they arrived, they were standing in the upstairs hall talking with Janet and Richard. At one point in the conversation, the man said that he sensed a presence in the hallway that leads to another guest room. There have been orbs captured on film in this same hallway.

At one time, help was needed with the telephone lines and a repairman was sent. While talking with Richard and Janet, he said that when he was a boy, he was in the school with his father. As they were getting ready to leave, his father needed to go up to the attic for some reason. When his father rejoined him downstairs, he told his son they were leaving. He was visibly shaken, and upon questioning, he said he'd had an experience in the Bell Tower. He was apparently upset enough that he told his son they were not coming back!

Another episode, coincidentally involving telephones, came to the owners' attention when new phone books were delivered. The man who brought them to the door came inside and in the course of conversation, they learned that his mother who helps him with the deliveries was in their van and refused to come inside the school. Indeed. she wouldn't even leave the van.

A couple who were staying in the Prosperity Suite were upstairs, she in their room and he was on the sofa in the hall reading the paper. He told the owners that he heard a rustling sound come from somewhere over his right shoulder, pass in front of him and proceed along the upstairs hall. He said it continued to the end of the hall and descended the stairs. At the time, the sofa was against the wall that is common to Rose's room. His wife, who was in their room, missed the entire episode!

In the summer of 2004, the B and B hosted a couple who were very interested in the paranormal. The man chose the room he did based on a family name. You guessed it, Miss Rose's room!

During their stay, they took pictures around the school house, late into the night. One of their photographs, taken in their room, showed orbs. His wife said that she was sensitive and reported to the owners that she had a strong dislike of the parlor. She assured them that it had nothing to do with the room's appearance, just the "psychic ambience".

The innkeepers have had a few strange incidences, too. Janet went to the kitchen late one evening to collect a favorite juice pitcher, planning to put it into the refrigerator to chill overnight. It was not in the accustomed cabinet, nor in the dishwasher or refrigerator. In fact, it was no where to be found, and is still missing to this day!

The Robert's dog, Tinker, a mini Dachshund, has been known to sneak upstairs, only to stand outside Rose's hallway, barking at the room's door from a safe distance!

And, last but not least, Richard had a chilling experience one day. He and Janet were in the kitchen and they were the only people in the building. The exterior doors are always kept locked. Richard looked toward the kitchen door and saw a shadowy figure walk past the window in the door, moving from the rear of the hall toward the front doors. He rushed out to check, thinking that the door was unlocked and someone must have entered the hallway. He found no one at all!
